Events: West LA Fall Series 2001

West LA Collage - Fall Series

Westwood Ski and Sports Club and the International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) are pleased to announce the fall racing series at West LA College for skateboard, inline skate, classic luge (buttboard), street luge, and gravity bikes. We'll have both racing and practice on Sunday November 18 and Sunday December 16 on the three hills inside the campus. The events will take place rain or shine, but if it rains the schedules may change. Sunday November 18 will feature a skateboard tight slalom race on B Street and the annual Skates and Gates Slalom Championship (with categories for inline, longboard, and short board) on D Street. There will also be practice all day for street luge, classic luge (buttboard), and gravity bikes on C Street.

Nov. 18 2001 Schedule:
  9:00 Setup
10:00 Registration and practice starts
12:00 Skates and gates slalom race
  2:00 Tight slalom race
  3:00 Awards ceremony

Sunday December 16 features IGSA regional races for gravity bike, street luge, and classic luge (buttboard). Also, there will be a giant slalom race on D Street with separate classes for skateboards and inline skates. The giant slalom course will be set in an open style allowing fast riding. There will also be slalom practice.

Dec. 16 2001 Schedule:
  9:00 Setup
10:00 Registration and practice starts
12:00 Giant slalom race
  1:00 Classic luge (buttboard) race
  1:30 Street luge race
  2:00 Gravity bike races
  3:00 Awards ceremony

Entry fees for club members are $25 for competitors (anyone riding on the street(s) with racing), and riding the practice hill only will be $10 for those not racing (free for paid racers). Joining Westwood Ski and Sports Club as a full member is encouraged, and entitles you to participate in ski and snowboard races and trips, water ski trips, parties, skating practices, equipment discounts, and more. Please bring your checkbook to become a full member ($30/year). Day memberships are available for $5/day, and are required for all riders who are not full members (i.e.: non-member fees are $30 and $15). Juniors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and will be charged only a practice fee even if they race. Spectators are free. Also, the first few who come early to help with the street cleaning and setup in the morning will receive a free race entry!

Race awards include Kryptonics wheels, Converse luge shoes, Darren Lott Streetluge Survival Guides, Westwood glasses, and more. Manufacturers and shop owners, it's not too late to supply prizes for these races! You can even just show up with something to add to the prize pool, and bring your banner to hang. We'll be sure to mention you in upcoming announcements.

Protective gear: for slalom and giant slalom helmets, pads (elbow and knee), and hand protection (gloves and/or wrist guards) are required, and hip pads are recommended. Please, no short shorts or tank tops. For street luge, buttboard, and gravity bikes, IGSA equipment rules will be used (helmets, leathers, and leather gloves are required).

When you see Willie Delorie and George Merkert, be sure to thank them for their hard work in getting the permit, and Bob Humiston for all his work on the accounting end, not to mention Marcus for his continual organizing of IGSA. Personally, I prefer any thanks in the form of cold ones ;-)

See you there,
Scott Peer
